It's sad, but it is ultimately his choice and the hospital's policy, as per care standards in the US. Maybe somewhere else can perform the surgery. The transplant process is pretty involved, and it's also an investment. I don't mean to sound cold, but if he got a transplant, then got Covid and it killed him, that would be a real shame, but also a waste of a kidney that someone else could use. Just my opinion.
This is from the article:
"Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist's policy follows the current standard of care in the United States, which is to vaccinate all patients on waiting lists or being evaluated for transplant," the hospital said.
"We understand that some patients may not wish to be vaccinated," the statement continued. "In this case, patients can opt to be evaluated at another transplant center."
Carswell said he is looking at other hospitals in the Carolinas and beyond to see if they'll perform the surgery

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." - Indigo Montoya
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is 91% effective in preventing the COVID-19 virus with symptoms in people age 16 and older. https://www.mayoclinic.org/...t-20484859
If you're saying that 91% is irrelevant, and you only trust a vaccine that is 100% effective? Then I guess you'll never take any vaccine, ever.

Anti posted, This is why they are requiring the vaccine... he would almost certainly die if he gets COVID again after the transplant. And then, not only might they not get paid for their services, they could be held responsible for his death.
You are assuming his natural immunity to Covid would be wiped out but not the vaccine provided immunity. Also the article says people have raised the money for the transplant. Have them pay upfront. It also says he has many willing to donate a kidney to him. If this were a case of an anonymous donor maybe I could agree it should go to someone with a better chance of survival than this guy with all his health problems, but the article makes it sound like these people are only willing to donate to him because they care about him. So he wouldn't be depriving someone else in need of a transplant and it makes no sense to deny him the surgery.

If this guy has already survived Covid why should he be forced to get the shot? Studies are now showing natural immunity to be superior to the vaccines.
After an organ transplant, he will be taking immunosuppressive drugs to prevent organ rejection. This means that his body will have virtually no immunity:
This is why they are requiring the vaccine... he would almost certainly die if he gets COVID again after the transplant. And then, not only might they not get paid for their services, they could be held responsible for his death.

If the family wants to donate the kidney and not meet the criteria of what the medical field has put forth. Then the family is more than welcome to find other means of transplanting the organ.

Yeah but kidneys are usually from family. Let him make his choice and stop patronizing folks, Anti. Someday, I guarantee you will find yourself in his place. Hopefully, no one will mock your choice.

LOL. Personal choices and "freedom" led this person to get themselves denied. There are all sorts of criteria a person has to meet to be eligible for a transplant.

The real question here is.....Why are they keeping him from getting a Kidney Transplant? If he dies, sounds like murder to me.

The man I work for and the rest of his family are vaccinated and all of them have been getting covid the last few weeks. My wife and I had it before the vaccine was available and survived and while it wasn't pleasant I have had way worst flu.
My dad also had it before the vaccine was available and he has a host of health problems from cancer to diabetes and heart disease. He has a pace maker and a number of other health problems and has had one foot in the grave for years and he only got a horse voice.
Just because you don't get the vaccine doesn't mean you are going to die or end up in the Hospital

Joe T, the vaccine stops many folks from getting and transmitting Covid. It also usually reduces the severity of Covid if folks do catch it. That's why 90% of folks now in ICU are unvaxxed.
